7 Steps to Introducing New Words To Your Toddler

For many parents, hearing the first word coming from your baby is one of the best moment they don’t want to miss. But the question is, how do they make the baby utter the first word? With me today, we are going to learn 7 steps to introducing new words to your toddler.

Tip 1: Start from You!

Yes! It starts from you. Introduce yourselves to your baby. Tell them it’s “momma”, “mummy”, “mom”, “mother”. Then, introduce your baby to his other friend, that is; “dad”, “daddy”. “papa”, “father”. These are the words that are very powerful and will often be used in your baby’s every word. You don’t believe it? Well, just start doing it and then observe as your child picks up his words.

Tip 2: Start with everything around you

Wherever your baby is, introduce him to everything he sees. If he is trying to hold your finger, tell him it’s “finger.” When he begins to sit, tell him “sit”. Touch your baby and say the word as you introduce him each word. Seeing is believing and that’s the golden rule for your baby at this stage.

Tip 3: What’s on the table?

Food is also one of the most interesting subjects you can use when introducing new words to your toddler. There are colours that will stimulate your baby’s visual intelligence, there is something he can touch to trigger his motor skills and certainly there are various tastes for your baby to experience when it comes to food.

Tip 4: What Am I Wearing?

Clothes is also a great item to be played with when introducing new word to your toddler. With colours to highlight, this is also a crucial way to identify is your child is colour blind or not. May be it’s too early, but eventually you can also help them to memorize colours.

Tip 5: Who Are They?

Introducing your toddler or baby to the extended family members does not only give him a new experience, but also help them to learn new words like, who “auntie” is referred to and who “cousins” are. With words to use to refer to everyone, that will slowly reduce fear of meeting new people a baby may experience.

Tip 6: Let’s Go Outside!

Alright, one of the 7 steps to introducing new words to your toddler is by letting them see what is there awaiting them outdoor. This can be a huge exploration for the baby as being outside will let him hear the birds chirping, the colours and shapes of flowers, shrubs, and trees let alone to let them feel the wind blows against his skin. You can use the outdoor activities to teach the baby part by part from introducing him to one single waving flower to the whole green of a field. Take time and do this frequently. There is so much thing to learn outdoor.

Tip 7: What’s In A Book?

Now, let’s go the world that they never see – the imagination world. Let’s take a book and introduce them with the words each page has. You can flip first without mentioning the words to surprise them with what each page contains, then go one by one by pointing to either the picture or the word itself. Slowly and spend enough time to each word. At this stage, forget about spelling. To know what an object is called is the first step.
