Book Review: David Copperfield by Charles Dickens

It is difficult to do a book review sometimes. Today I decided to go down memory lane into the bulk of books I have from the Wordsworth Classic collection I have at home. It’s going to be David Copperfield since that was the first book from Charles Dickens that I read.

Although English seems to be my first language, however, I did not read any evergreen and famous English literature until I was a teenager. I found out about David Copperfield’s book in Kinokuniya one day as I was asked by my lecturer to read texts from Charles Dickens. All the while before that, I thought David Copperfield was a magician. Do you have the same thought?

This book is a long-story kind of book, telling about how a young boy named David Copperfield was born 6 month after the demise of his father. His mother, who was pretty loving and childish raised him with a housekeeper before marrying a violent husband and brought in a devilish step sister into his house. Following that, both David and his mother had a miserable life. David’s studies fell behind him and was sent to school by the stepfather.

One holiday, David came home and found out that his mother has given birth to a baby boy. Unfortunately, David’s mother and the baby died shortly after David went back to his school.

After completing his school, David studied to be a practor, some kind of lawyer. The wealth of his aunt with whom he had stayed deteriorated and had forced David to work during the day and evening. In between, he learned shorthand from his former school friend. That was when he earned his fame writing fiction.

His writing career was very much encouraged by Agnes. It is said that this story of David Copperfield was very much a true story or an autobiography of the author himself, Charles Dickens. The entire story was written with very deep emotion and you would love to read until the end. You will also be presented with a wide range of characters in this book, some of which are David’s friends and foes. This was Charles Dicken’s personal favourite. If it is a favourite of his own author, what do you think it will be when you read it? Hurry up, get your copy of David Copperfield today.
